The Light of the Oracle Victoria Hanley 9780553495027 Books

There seemed to be two visions for this book warring with one another. On one hand, it as excellent, straight fantasy with an interesting magic system and developed political history. The characters and plot are expected, but well executed. On the other hand, there was a feminine YA element that, at times, felt out of place with the rest of the narrative. The high school style social dynamics are appropriate, but there are other parts of the teenage experience that do not translate well from modern American life into the castle and wizard fantasy setting.

Still worth a read.

I really enjoyed this book. It really creates a good visual, and makes you want to jump in the book with the characters. I loved the world Victoria Hanly creates in this book. I absolutly love how the characters are decribed. This book made me excited and unable to put it down. I hope there is a sequel.
This book is a great book. It is enjoyable, well written, and has a good plot/story line. The characters are created realistically, with both good and bad parts.

Characters

The characters in this book are realistic, the sort of person you would really consider human. The characters have good and bad parts, skills and failures. This book mixes together fantasy and reality in the characters.

Writing Style

Past tense, third person, is definately the best style of writing. In this book, it is written like that, and is quite nice to read. The writing style in this book is nice and easy to read.

Plot/Story Line

The plot in this book is great. It has problems, solutions, and goals in between. The problems vary from the littlest things to someone trying to kill a princess. The solutions are the sort of things you would consider possible. The goals are pushing forwards to a point that isn't too far away, like what real people do.

Overall

Yes, I would recommend this book. It has good characters, a good style of writing, and a good plot.
Hanley has kept up the good work with this book. The story is very well written so you don't feel things are just added in just so you can get from point A to point C in record time. The characters very interesting, even the ones you don't like. It is a pretty traditional fantasy story, but it different enough to pull you in and make you wonder what is going to happen next. If you like reading The Seer and the Sword and The Healer's Keep, you will definately like this book. If you haven't read Victoria Hanley before, but like light fantasy, you should like this book. You can really read the books in any order as they do not really follow each other like a series, but are companion books.
Light of the Oracle is the third book Hanley has set in the same fantasy universe - and aside from that, the three books could hardly be more different, and all are excellent. The Seer and the Sword is a political-military novel, with relatively little magic and a lot of action. Healer's Keep is a save-the-world novel almost entirely about magical warfare between the protagonists and Ultimate Evil. And this one is an "academy" story about relationships among students and faculty at an institute organized to control prophecy. Others have summarized the plot; I'll just say that I've loved all three books, and that based on her start Hanley is fully worthy to be mentioned in the same breath as Tamora Pierce, Jane Yolen, Sherwood Smith, and Diana Wynne Jones. She doesn't have anything like their body of work produced yet, so I can't say if she'll sustain it as well, but so far so good.
This is quite possibly the best book I have yet to read. If you're thinking about a good book to read, then read this one. I love this book. I read this book once before I got my kindle but couldn't bare the thought of not always having it with me. READ THIS BOOK OR Y YOU WILL REGRET IT FOREVER!!!!!! D
The three books that make up this trilogy are very loosely related, and they're all great. (You don't really have to read them in order, but it does help.) This one was immediately my favorite though--it is very imaginative and detailed. I'd recommend it to any fantasy reader.
