I love Hiaasen's writing. I've enjoyed most everything he's written and am always on the look-out for things I've not yet read. Paradise Screwed is no exception. As someone who's lived in Florida almost all her life, I can say Hiaasen is spot on. What the developers and politicians have done to our State is deplorable. Of course, they've been ably aided and abetted by all the folks who want to move here (and then complain about the climate, the bugs, and the critters). I'm just so sorry that so many of the old timers are giving up, selling up, and moving away. I can't really blame them. Money talks. We've a lot of room for improvement in many areas! Unfortunately, it all depends on our voting public and our ability to ensure our legislators actually DO the will of the people. Oh, well ... at least Mr. Hiaasen can sock it to us with humor!

Paradise Screwed Carl Hiaasen Diane Stevenson 9780425186060 Books Reviews

Not my favorite Hiaasen book. It's a book of his newspaper publications. Some are funny, others made me put it down & read something else. All depends on what you like.
This was a great read! As a non-resident of Florida, it was interesting to read about the changing face of the political & cultural landscape that shaped Florida into the hotbed of wackiness it is today. Covering the 80s through the 00s, this book takes a sarcastic & witty approach to telling the back story to some of the more colorful history from Hiassen's daytime news job when he's not writing hysterical fiction in the same vibe. You will laugh throughout the book but then you'll have to keep reminding yourself, it's what really happened. Then you'll laugh even harder!
Carl Hiaasen's second compilation of his Miami Herald columns continues to show the biting wit which is prevalent in his usually terrific novels. But my guess is that the first book of columns "Kick" was probably designed to be the Best of Hiaasen with no plans for a sequel. Thus the columns contained in "Paradise" are the second cut and thus just not as good, although they are enjoyable to read. Not as many idiotic South Florida politicians this time around, not as many idiotic citizens. I was also disappointed in the way he handled the Florida election fiasco for the 2000 Presidential election. This was a topic just made for his humor, but he chose to use his forum as a soapbox to get a recount and to get Al Gore elected (he doesn't say it, but it was pretty obvious to me). My hope is that he plans to use this as fodder for a future novel and thus wanted to save his material.
Hiaasen is a great columnist. I live over 1,000 miles away from South Florida, but he gets his point across pretty well. It would have been nice if each story had a little afterword as to what ultimately happened to the people in the column (i.e. did the politician give up his $15,000 desk that was paid for with taxpayer money voluntarily).
Good for the Hiaasen completest, but the first book "Kick" is the better choice.
A marvelous collection of Karl Hiaasen's columns, you'll be weeping with laughter at the hilarity of the degrees of stupidity, duplicitousness, and just out and out corruption that are a part of living in Florida. An astute observer with an exquisite sensitivity to the importance of the quality of the survival of every living creature, his work is a must-read for anyone who cares about life, loves a good writer, and can see the humor in the darkness.
Carl Hiaasen is one of Two writers that I get EVERY book they write (when they co-write, so so). But pure Hiaasen is Fall into reading that I Love! I hate for one of his books to end. I ordered all of them at one time! And am down to only one left. I'm sad, because he has nailed down the growing problems in Florida with a wicked, Wild sense of humor that makes me laugh so loud I almost fall of the pot!!! If you knew Florida a couple of decades back you will feel like you are reading about your own back yard. I have been to or lived in Every place he writes about including Islamaroda! My Step Mother worked at the Theater of the Sea and I lived on the golf course next to the Metodist Chuch. Less than one hundred yards from the Atlantic and two hundred yards, across the highway to the Gulf. Uncle Raggy
Paradise Screwed is a collection of newspaper editorials written by Carl Hiaasen, who happens to be one of my favorite authors. I was first introduced to his writing years ago through one of his novels, Sick Puppy, that I picked up in the Miami Airport on my way to a vacation in the Keys and my wife was seriously concerned that I had lost my mind because of the constant laughter his prose caused. I have read every book he published and they are all notable for their consistently funny prose and very fluently created characters. Paradise Screwed exhibits that terrific style and humor applied to social and political commentary through a collection of Op/Ed columns Hiassen has written for the Miami Herald over the years. He has commented on everything from political incompetence to public corruption and everything in between and never fails to skewer the public target he is aiming at while adding a bit of humor or sarcasm to the mix. I hope Hiassen continues to write so that I can continue to be entertained and educated at the same time.
This book is a series of reprinted Miami Herald columns by the author. It would have been trenchant 25 or so years ago, just after the essays were published and the events were fresh in mind, but lacked relevance today. I enjoy Carl Hiaasen's novels, which I find clever and entertaining, and I enjoyed his columns when they were timely and relevant, but I feel I was conned into buying this book, having been led to understand that it was current.
