I can only say BRAVO and again BRAVO. What an enjoyable read. Lunievicz's writing is very articulate without slipping into ego-inflating or self-satisfied flourishes. Just the facts with efficient language that lets the characters breathe and enough descriptive detail to evoke early twentieth century Queens and Manhattan. The author did his homework and turned it into art. The storytelling flows so believably that I wondered if family history inspired him.Lunievicz's ability to take an unpopular sport - fencing - and breathe great humanity into it astounds me. I probably would not finish a fencing novel if the author had not made his protagonist's need to fence so convincing. He trusted his instructors even though both were flawed like his father. The sport propelled him into manhood.
I was very moved by the protagonist's ability to maintain childhood friendships and respect for imperfect role models. The resolution to his longing for a maternal connection is very gratifying and the promise of a future with his love interest makes me long for a sequel.

Review I feel "Open Wounds" is one of the greatest adventure books I've ever read. I have never given much thought to the art of fencing nor have I paid close attention to some of those old movies where such an art is or was used often, this book made me sit up and take notice. The story in and of itself is one of a timeless nature that can remind you what it was like to be a kid and what true friendship really meant. It is a coming of age story as well as a story that shows you are what you want yourself to be, not what your parents or others make you. It's a book about overcoming the obstacles that try to drag you down in life and rising above to become something great, to become your own person and to show the world your worth.
The characters in this book are alive and vivid, you get the sense of being right there with them, living through their era and knowing what it was like to be surviving in one of the hardest times in history. The setting is placed during World War II at the cusp of immigration when so many have come to America to escape the overbearing presence of Hitler and his crusade for World domination. It's hard to believe that these times were once the norm and even though a lot of the immigrants came to America for the same reasons they still were at odds over religion, race, ethnicity, and creed. It was a time when friends made, were friends earned and often they remained friends for life.
There is a rich history to this novel as well as a story that is emotional, exciting, and will have you cheering long and hard for Cedric Wyman. I urge you to take this time machine back in history and allow your imagination to become one with Cedric as he takes you on a journey you will not soon forget. Joseph Lunievicz has written a novel that could easily become a classic and I hope to see more from this amazing writer. Though this book is written for the young adult genre I would caution parents to not give this book to children under the age of 15, due to minimum graphic language and a few graphic scenes seen through the mind of young Cedric. This is a book well worth its 5 Ravens and if I were able I'd give it many more.

A brilliant debut novel by Lunievicz. An exhilarating look at old New York, some truly unforgettable characters, and who knew fencing could be so intriguing. Bravo, Joseph Lunievicz.
THIS BOOK IS ENTERTAINING, TOUCHING AND JUST A WONDERFUL READING EXPERIENCE. I AM NOT A YOUNG READER. I HAVE BEEN READING FOR AT LEAST 66 OR 67 YEARS OF MY 71 YEARS. THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR JUST YOUNG PEOPLE, BUT FOR ALL AGES. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SEE MORE OF CID AS HE GROWS AND MATURES.
THERE IS SO MUCH JUNK AVAILABLE TODAY, THAT IT IS REFRESHING TO SEE A BOOK OF SUCH QUALITY. IT WOULD ALSO MAKE A GREAT MOVIE.
I have to admit that I wasn't sure what to expect about this book despite it's good reviews, mainly because I'm an absolute ignorant about the fencing or theater world which seems prevalent in both the description and reviews of it. But after starting reading the first few pages I was completely hooked. I found the story of little Cyd extremely compelling, sad and sweet at the same time.
I did get teary eyed in more than one occasion, is definitely the kind of book that will touch some cords inside you, and the fact that it does it with a subject so unfamiliar as fencing (at least for most people) pays tribute to the author's brilliancy.
Couldn't put down the book until I finished it, left me such an uplifting feeling when I did. Cyd's story will stay with me for a long time.
